Event Description

The Guelph Jazz Festival was founded in 1994 by a small group of friends who shared a love of jazz and a commitment to the community of Guelph. In its twenty-four year history, the Festival’s successes have been many, including presenting a challenging colloquium that examines jazz within a cultural context, facilitating community educational workshops focusing especially on youth, partnering with several organizations to present music and broaden audiences, commissioning four new works, winner of the Premier’s Award for Excellence in the Arts (June 2010) and named as a finalist for this award the previous two years, and recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for the Arts in 1997, 2000 and 2001 for continued growth and innovation.

While the Festival puts particular effort into bringing Canadian artists to the fore, it also presents international artists, especially those who seldom perform in this country. The five-day Guelph Jazz Festival is run annually the second weekend after Labour Day and has four main components:
• The Main Stage showcases Canadian and international artists in a series of collaborative performances. Our non-traditional and often intimate venues include a local church and an art gallery.
• Jazz at Market Square, one of the most popular events of the Festival, is a free event that puts the music in an open-air venue on one of Guelph’s funkiest downtown streets.
• The Colloquium features free educational workshops, panel discussions, keynote lectures, and unique performances by Canadian and international jazz academics and artists.
• The Guelph Jazz Festival Around Town Series encourages local restaurants, pubs and businesses to participate in the Festival by presenting jazz bands in their establishments. This contributes greatly to the overall buzz that the Festival generates in town.
